With a large maximum aperture of f/1.4, the 85mm lens is capable of image compositions with selective focus; a feature especially pleasing for portraiture. High performance image quality is maintained over the entire focusing range from infinity down to the minimum focusing distance of 33 inches. This is achieved via a new internal focusing design IFD, which moves 6 of the 10 focusing elements for focusing, thus reducing distortion remarkably well.
The lens' large amount of optical glass and attendant mass ensure a high level of stabilization during exposures. Thus, significantly longer exposure times can be obtained, even hand-held, with very good results. Long exposure times, combined with the large maximum aperture of f/1.4, enables available light exposure to be captured easily.
